Rolex Explorer 1016
Here we have an absolutely spectacular vintage Rolex Explorer 1016 dating to circa-1975. These were once overlooked pieces, in large part owing to their 36mm case size. With the recent trend of downsizing to more classically sized mens watches, they have enjoyed a huge resurgence in desirability, collectability, and value and have become one of the vintage Rolex’s to have.
This particular example is what is known as the Mark 3 variant, and is one of the best examples we’ve had the pleasure of laying our eyes upon. The case has been polished before, but lugs remain wide with excellent finishing.
The original MK3 dial is in amazing condition, with no imperfections visible. The tritium has aged to a gorgeous eggshell colour, and the hands match perfectly. Only mild degradation is visible on the tritium.
The original hands show oxidisation, and some cracking of the tritium though still intact.
The bracelet is a slightly newer 78360 with 580 endlinks, and 11 links. The clasp code is VC dating it to circa-1978. Very tight condition with barely any stretch present.
It had a partial service by RSC in KL in 2015, and was serviced again in circa-2018 by a previous owner. Currently keeping COSC time at near-300 degrees of amplitude.
Comes with period correct box, RSC ‘partial service’ papers from 2015, authentication receipt and Watch Vault cleaning cloth.
This is a truly spectacular example of a 1016. You won’t find many better.
