For us here at Watch Vault, this is quite simply the best 3-hander we’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Utilising the 40mm Classic Origin as the base, already one of our haute horology dress pieces on the market, Revolution and The Rake have weaved their magic in conjunction with Laurent Ferrier and created THE modern scientific dial to have.

The aforementioned 40mm case is fashioned in steel, which is important as not only is it hardy, but also allows the fitment of a bracelet which takes the useability of this watch to a whole other level. Within this case lies the most magnificent sunburst champagne dial, atop of which sits the pronounced hour circle, chemin de fer, small seconds subdial and logo decals all finished in slate grey. The real genius in the design is the oversized Breguet numerals at 12, 3 and 9 which are constructed in white gold, and then ruthenium finished to match the rest of the dark grey features. The way they appear to almost float above the dial is phenomenal, and adds a level of depth not otherwise seen on other Laurent Ferriers, nor on a traditional sector dial. To top it off, the hands are the most magnificent white gold assegai hands, finished in matching ruthenium. To see them under a loupe is perfection personified.

Flip it over and you’re greeted by one of the most beautifully finished and presented manual wind movements, the LF116.01. Revolution chose to have the movement finished in frosted gold, a finish exclusive to their pieces, which further amplifies the finishing of the bevels, which is as close to as perfect as it gets in our opinion. The feel of the click when manually winding the pieces makes it an absolute joy to interact with. It’s a technically excellent movement too, featuring a free-sprung balance wheel with the Breguet overcoil balance spring and Laurent Ferrier’s long-blade ratchet system.

It comes mounted to a lovely LF caramel coloured strap, and also includes a steel bracelet. This is not made by LF, but by Staib we believe (don’t quote me). They were included with this series of watch, and change the look up completely, allowing it to be worn with a tee and shorts, or in really humid environments with no issue at all.That’s the real genius of this watch, it’s total usability for a watch which would traditionally have been wheeled out for special occasions or to wear with a suit.

These were released in a limited series of 12 pieces, all sold out in a flash. This piece, however, does not fall into that series. This is actually the protoype piece, and is marked as such. For collectors, this makes it all the more special.

This particular piece was purchased in August 2022 and presents in TZ Near Mint condition. The case shows a few light hairlines, and some small strap change marks on the back. There are two tiny scratches that you can feel with your finger nail on the bezel near 5 and just below it on the lug. They’re extremely small, but there. Bracelet shows a few very light marks, with some desk dive marks on the buckle. There is also a very small dust fleck on the dial inboard of the 8 marker. The bracelet is down one link, and shows only the light hints of use. The strap has been worn half a dozen times, and is still not broken in yet.

A very special watch indeed, and a super rare opportunity to pick up a prototype piece of one of the coolest 3-hand releases in recent memory.
